The humble loafer
has long been high on my list of wardrobe essentials.
Comfortable,
practical and decidedly sleek, they act as the perfect anchor to my characteristically slouchy and oversized mode of dressing, or conversely can balance any overtly feminine silhouettes and bring them to a neat midpoint I feel more comfortable occupying.
In short, the loafer
would have to be one of my favourite styles of shoe, so when various designers
started coming out with versions featuring elevated block heels and off-beat textures and embellishments I was all for it – anything that helps me expand my
current loafer collection is fine by me.
Gucci has to
be at the forefront of the movement, with fringing, pearls and their signature
horse-bit detailing all donning their block-heeled designs, whilst the likes of
Chloe are
going with a more subtle approach with retro velvet and lasered detailing, and Tibi with edgier
croc-embossed, eyelet stamped versions, among many others all jumping on the
bandwagon.
This pair I’m
wearing by up-and-coming brand Dorateymur via Farfetch are one
of my personal favourites, with their square toe and stark patent leather they
make a slightly edgy statement whilst remaining polished and subtle. They also come in a metallic
silver version, which I am actually really into. Weird,
but true.
So why the revival?
The real appeal of
the elevated loafer lies in its ability to traverse the line between the
masculine and feminine and the polished and the off-beat. It occupies a neat space that appeals to those looking for a slightly more femme take on this
classic men’s shoe whilst giving us diehard fans a fresh take on our favourite
silhouette. Or, more simply, a great excuse to buy more shoes. Need I say more?
Flattering,
sophisticated, edgy, subtle and timeless all at once, there’s little not to love about them.
I like wearing mine with denim and
loose silky shirts, or any similarly relaxed wardrobe staples for
an elevated off-duty look, however they look equally great paired with sleek
suiting or anything more structured. Personally though I love the polish they
add to loose and relaxed silhouettes, giving your look an effortless purpose
and elevation beyond what a standard loafer can offer.
Could the elevated
loafer be the perfect shoe? It comes pretty close in my eyes.

  31. I like black coat on black satin blouse combo. You do monochrome well. I think the jeans add a great contrast, and like you dais, the shoes anchor the look.
